CHAPTER NINE

Mick wrapped his long curls into a bun and pulled a black mesh hairnet over the mass. Not his best look. Jonesy pulled off his plastic gloves and handed his apron to Mick, spinning behind him and slipping out the door. Shift change on The Knight Bus food truck involved a series of complex maneuvers. They designed the mini kitchen for three to four people. Normal sized people. For football-sized people, more than two rendered movement impossible.

He slipped the burnt orange apron over his head, not taking time to tie it. Orders were backing up. He wrapped sandwiches quickly, his actions smooth and practiced. He didn’t have to think about it. Which turned out to be a good thing as his thoughts kept drifting toward a certain gorgeous brunette. Last night, when he should have been watching game film, he’d been so preoccupied with thoughts of her he’d binged an entire season of the Great British Bake Off and subsequently went online and bought a Mary Berry cookbook and three cake tins.

The woman was a distraction. Plain and simple.

“That’s one sexy hairnet, Mr. Safety.”

And right on time.

He turned to find Jessica leaning against the side door, propped open to help cool the truck. “Hey, I thought I was Mr. Football. Did I get demoted?” he said, unable to hold back his smile.

“Just trying to manage your ego.”

“I think the hairnet does that,” Mick said. He grabbed a bag of chips and tossed them to his teammate to fill the waiting order, tamping down the urge to pull her into his chest and wrap his arms around her. Friends hugged, right?

She laughed and a warmth filled his chest cavity and spread through his arms and legs. “Do I need one?”

What? Had she read his mind? Did she want a hug? He shook his head. No, she meant the hairnet. Head in the game, Lanuola.

Her hair hung in a sleek ponytail, strung through the back of a Nashville Knights ball cap. “Nah, you don’t need one until you have thick, lustrous locks like mine.”

The teammate standing next to him snorted.

“What?” Mick asked, turning to the big-as-a-brick-wall lineman.

Aaron shuffled behind Mick to pull a dessert from the mini freezer. “Mick always tries to say his hair is naturally that way, but the only place I’ve seen more hair products than his locker is at a salon.”

Jessica laughed. “I knew it.”

“Way to sell me out, man,” Mick said, clapping his teammate on the back.

“I’m Aaron,” the teammate said, reaching his hand out to her.

“Jessica,” she said, tapping a finger to her chest, shaking his hand with her other hand.

“Oh, I know,” Aaron said with a soft chuckle.

Jessica’s eyes found Mick’s, sliding him a quizzical look.

“He can’t stop talking about you.” He winked at Jessica, setting an order on the window ledge.

“Dude,” Mick grumbled, shaking his head.

Jessica’s eyes widened, but she made no comment. “Is there room in there for three?” She asked, checking out the space behind Mick.

“Maybe.” Aaron wiped his hands on a towel and snapped it against Mick’s hip.
